The types and clinical applications of acupuncture needles

Acupuncture needles are classified into nine major categories based on their functions:

Filiform needle: It is a commonly used needle with a diameter of 0.25 to 0.35mm, used for systemic diseases such as internal medicine and gynecology.

Fire needle: Made of tungsten wire, when inserted at high temperature, it can dispel cold and dampness, and treat arthralgia and warts.

Plum blossom needle: Multiple needles are used for tapping and needling, stimulating large areas of acupoints, and is suitable for skin diseases, etc.

Triangular needle: With a triangular cutting edge, it is used to puncture the meridians and release blood, improving symptoms of blood stasis.

Electroacupuncture: Connected to an electrical stimulator, it enhances the stimulation of acupoints and is often used for neuralgia.

The operation techniques for each type of needle are different, and the doctor needs to choose flexibly according to the condition.
